India: A Light Within is a collaborative project involving photography, Indian classical dance, prose, and poetry.

This exhibition features:

  • Photographs of Kolkata, India by Charlee Brodsky
  • Images of dance mudras – hand gestures – from Odissi, a style of Indian classical dance performed by Sreyashi Dey

Charlee Brodsky, a fine art documentary photographer and a professor of photography at Carnegie Mellon University, describes her work as dealing with social issues and beauty. A selection of her awards includes the 2012 Pittsburgh Artist of the Year; Tillie Olsen Award with writer Jim Daniels for their book, Street; an Emmy with the film team that created the documentary, Stephanie, which is based on her friend’s life with breast cancer; the Pearl of Hope award given by Sojourner House for her work with her students in the Pittsburgh community; two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowships; and was the 2014 Honored Educator given by the Society for Photographic Education, Mid-Atlantic Region. Uday Hajra, a Kolkata, India based photographer, will showcase three mini-series that chronicle his photographs from three contexts. He will also show images of his home life during the pandemic lockdown, street life in Kolkata, the city where he lives, and of rural life from Kamarpara village near Shantiniketan in Bengal, his second home.
